Taking a screenshot with Windows 10
The simplest way to take a screenshot on Windows 10 is to look on your keyboard for the Print Screen key. It is often labelled “PrtScrn” or something similar.
Once a screenshot is copied, you need to paste it somewhere to see it. You can paste it directly into the chat tool on AdvantageLearn.com or email it directly to us.
On some machines, especially on laptops, you might need to hold down the function key first and then press the print screen key.
There are also a number of ways to modify the behaviour of print screen:
Capture the active window
Press ALT + Print Screen to take a screenshot of the active window, instead of the entire screen.
Capture a portion of the screen
Note: This is a new addition to Windows 10 and might require you to install newer updates for it to be available.
When you press Windows key + Shift + S, the screen will dim a bit and the mouse pointer will change. You can then drag across the screen to select a portion to capture it as a screenshot. You will then be able to paste the screenshot to view it.
Use Snip & Sketch
This tool is built into Windows 10 now and gives you more options for taking and editing screenshots. To get started with it, follow these steps:
- Open Start.
- Search for Snip & Sketch, click the top result to open the app.
- Click the New button in the top-left corner.
- Select the type of snip you want to use, including, we suggest rectangular Clip.
- Take the screenshot and save
Taking a screenshot on macOS
The simplest way to take a screenshot on macOS is to hold down CMD + Shift + 3. This will capture your entire screen and save it to your default location - usually your desktop.
Capture a specific window
If you press CMD + Shift + 4, your mouse pointer will change and you’ll be able to drag your mouse across an area of your screen to just capture that area. Once you let the mouse button go, the screenshot will be saved.
Open screenshot options
Note: You need macOS Mojave or a newer version to use this option
By pressing CMD + Shift + 5, you’ll open up the macOS screenshot app which will give you much more control. You can choose between capturing the entire screen, the selected window, or a portion of the screen. You’ll also be able to take a video recording of the selected window or a specific section of the screen.
Taking a screenshot on Linux
If you are using one of the GNOME-based desktop environments such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint, the print screen functionality should work similarly to how it does on Windows, using the Print Screen button.
